Abel Gomes, a dark-skinned descendant of Mohawk and Narragansett Indian, makes up his mind to become a Jew.
He has no idea the winding complicated path he is starting down.
Raised a Catholic, he is married to an assimilated Jewish woman.
He becomes Ovadyah, a committed Conservative Jew, a gabbai in his synagogue, and something of a nuisance with his incessant questions.
Finally, he meets an observant family and they realize that Orthodoxy offers them the Jewish fulfillment they have sought for so long.
